Phew! What a busy weekend! It all started with "Operation Sandbox Install" on Friday afternoon. Grandma, Papa, Elijah, Sharon, and Aria came over and we all played while David and Papa put the drift wood in the ground for the sandbox (no pics yet- sorry). Aria and Willow were so tired that we gave them pillows on the swings and they rested their little heads. Aria actually looked like she was about to fall asleep at one point. Before bed Elijah and Grandma gave Willow a bubble bath- everyone loves bubble baths! On Saturday morning Jennifer had us over for brunch along with Aunt Peg, Bre, Great Grandma, and Grandma Gail. What Fun! Grace and Willow are finally at a close enough stage that they can play together. On Sunday the Rogers came over for a fabulous brunch prepared by Chef Daddy. It was baby Joey's Rogers Family debut. Even though we have all met him, it was his first party. I chose the photo of the girls gushing over him as the largest for this collage because it was such a special moment. Willow was petting his hair and the girls- old and young- were in awe of his sweetness. Oh boy! OUR boy:)

PBS Kids' Fest

What fun we had on Saturday! Sharon, Aria, Willow, and I went to the PBS Kids' Fest and Character Breakfast. Willow looks like she is getting wacked by Sid the Science Kid's hair, but she is really checking him out. She loved the characters- no fear. Her favorite was Sabertooth!

$15 for a kid ticked and all she ate was strawberries! It is about the fun, not the $$ though!

Seriously, she must be the most amazing person on Earth!

Playing at the festival! FABULOUS day with our buddies Sharon and Aria. One complaint- they did not have a nursing area at the fest. Not that I need a designated area to nourish (emotionally and physically) my baby, but some moms prefer a place to sit and relax while they nurse. But, ah, have no worries. I am on a mission and I am sure PBS will see the importance once it is brought to their attention!

How cool was it to see all four girls big enough to play together? Willow trolled around Joey and Kim's house like she was on a mission. She is wearing her super cute hat that Grandma made for her and pushing the dolly stroller around the house (including down the stairs into the family room!).

Jolie, Willow and I went apple picking at Stoney Hill Orchard last week. It was awesome. The orchard is beautiful and clean and the apples were delish! Willow gorged herself on three apples and I lost count on how many Jolie ate. The apples are low enough so the girls can reach them. They thought it was so cool to pick and then bite.

There is an ongoing dolly battle between Jolie and Willow. Willow is always taking Jolie's dollies. FINALLY Willow can lay claim to a cool doll. Notice my hand swiping it away- I wan't trying to be mean. Willow whispered to me to get it back for her:) (Actually Jolie is very kind to Willow and brings her a dolly to play with when she comes over)

Willow's cousins helped her open all her gifts. It was amazing how four (I started typing three then realized that Willow is a toddler now too!) managed to open all the gifts and be kind and take turns. It was actually really fun.

My New Swing Set!!!

After much pondering we finally made the purchase! Papa laid out all the parts and began the LONG process of assembling my swing set. While we waited for it to be put together Elijah took me for a ride...

I tried out the slide and...

played in the sand.When Papa needed our help we gave him a hand . After a REAL long time Mom finally decided where she wanted it set up and Papa had a swing up for me to try.I am a real big girl!

She is not a "good girl"

Who knew praising could come at such a cost?

As a public school teacher I come from the ranks of adults who hand out approval to the many young minds of formless clay, just waiting to be molded into "good children" (note my sarcasm:). Hell, I have even instituted a flip-a-card behavior system and given out pencils inscribed with the saying, I was caught doing something good.

Moments pass me by when I think, "Shame on me for being such a tyrant". And then I remember that it is about the moment at hand, the present. Presently I am learning; I am growing. Good girl is a phrase that I used to think would help a child strive to continue a given behavior. With all that I have recently learned I now shudder when I hear it. Willow is not a good girl. She is much more dynamic, much more complex, and has way more potential than to be praised with a term like good girl.

I have been doing a lot of reading on a site called The Natural Child Project and in the book Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn. These resources have opened my eyes up to the effects of praise on children. Don't start cursing me yet- I am not nit-picking or saying that I am a stern faced mama. Quite the opposite. I want Willow to know that my love, support and approval are always there for her. Keep reading and hopefully you will get where I am coming from. The link to The Natural Child Project is a great article that includes a wealth of information. I will share the things that hit home with me as I have read these resources.

1- Praise for developmental milestones such as eating, walking, and going to the bathroom is simply ridiculous. Children are more intellectually advanced then to be trained by praise for biological functions. Pets, on the other hand, maintain a simplicity that warrants praise for such tasks. Don't get me wrong; when Willow started walking I was excited for her. My excitement, however, was expressed as a celebration, not as praise. Walking does not need praise. Willow has the internal motivation to want to continue walking without me telling her that I approve and that she is good because she walks. Was she bad when she scooted on her little bum like a crab who lost a few limbs?

2- Praise as a reward for desired behavior misses the mark. I want Willow to be a kind person because she feels it is right in her heart, not because I will give her a treat or because if she is unkind she will get punished. When it comes to character and moral development, praise is counterproductive. It places the emphasis externally instead of on the internal human component.

3- Praise extinguishes innate desire and thwarts natural choice. I want for Willow what her heart wants. If she likes racing cars instead of doing puzzles then that is what she should do. If I impose with a "I like how you are sitting so nice and doing puzzles" she may look to seek my approval and do the less fulfilling activity, and therefore the activity that offers less growth. While this is a mild example, you can see how it could apply to subjects in school, sport choice, choice of friends, career...

4-Praise makes my love conditional. It says, "When you do X I love you, and when you do Y I my love is questionable." God help me if I ever give Willow this message. I want Willow to know that my love for her is strong when she is happy and sad, mean and kind, when she is clean and when she has a pooooopy foot (thanks Kim!).

Why? Why am I so anal? Why do I delve so deeply into the simple things? Because it is the simple things that are the foundation for us as a whole. Dinner as a family is a simple thing, but it is the foundation for connectedness and communication. Reading stories before bed is a simple thing, but it is the foundation for a life of literacy. When my mom and dad would buy me a Welcome Spring gift every year it was a simple thing, but it was the foundation for my love of nature. Praise may seem like a simple thing, but it is the foundation for an unsure relationship in which a child questions her parents' love and support.

When you are excited for Willow please celebrate WITH her and save the good girl for Abby.

Dancing with Willow

I am finding mothering is a constant dance between two souls. Sometimes we trip on each other's toes, and sometimes it is a smooth flow. This week we have experienced a bit of both. Willow learned the sign for "nurse". It is amazing to have communication other than reading her body language. She is so proud too. She will sign "nurse", we will start nursing, she will stop and give me the sign again and a BIG smile. This is the flow; the easy step of seasoned dancers. Nighttime, however, has been one of those sloppy, toe stepping dances that two preteens perform at their first middle school dance. Willow has such staying power when it comes to falling asleep. She can stay organized in the face of some serious tiredness. For the past week she has not been able to fall asleep at night. Not that she struggles- she just nurses and nurses with her eyes open for a couple hours. As you know, we don't cry it out for all of the many well researched reasons (check some out here http://phdinparenting.wordpress.com/2008/08/11/cry-it-out-cio-is-it-harmful-or-helpful/) and I gratefully rock and nurse every night (and will until she grows into her next phase on her own). So I am left with the tools that I have in my mommy bag- my dance steps that Willow knows well. Nighttime sleep now comes by way of walking around the block while wearing Willow in the Mei Tai. She is no match for the Mei Tai- she is sleeping within minutes. It took me a couple weeks to realize that wearing her would be the way to achieve sleep, but this is the dance. Some dances are easily learned and others take much time to master. Therein lies the power of the partnership. Mothering is a partnership in which we both learn, we both grow, we both dance.

We Are Famous!!

Ok, so it is by means of a free magazine, but it is still cool. We were interviewed and photographed for an article on co-sleeping in WNY Family Magazine. You can get a copy for free at Wegmans or Tops. The article starts on page 18 and continues on page 66 (that is where our photo is). The author is a man who was a client of mine at the gym. We had discussed our kids many times and he emailed me a few weeks ago requesting an interview. I was more than excited to do it, as it makes me feel like an advocate for babies who want to be close to their mama and daddy.

So yes, we have a family bed. Willow safely sleeps next to me as she has since birth. There are many, many reasons why we co-sleep. First and foremost, my instinct tells me it is right. It is natural and comfortable. It has allowed us to respect Willow's natural sleep paterns and still meet our own sleep needs. Our family bed ensured Willow's biological rhythms were in check as an itty bitty baby. Research has shown that young infants who sleep near mom have less sleep apnea episodes and are more easily able to regulate heart patterns. Sleeping close to Willow also has made nursing at night a non-issue. When she needs to nurse, she does. Now that she is older I often do not even wake. Co-sleeping has helped us forge our bond and has been a big part of why we can so easily communicate. And seriously, who doesn't want to wake up next to a smiling, giggling baby every morning?

A bed is an intimate place, a place for love and trust, a place for family. Am I going to roll over on her? Well, I have never rolled over on the cat, David, or out of bed and with mama-radar I can say with 100% certainty that I will not. When will she move out? If I am lucky, never. But realistically, when she is ready. Each child is different, but when the tides of independence strike her she will find her way. What will happen when we have another baby? A California King- sized bed!

Daddy bought me this really cool fairy crown. I met Linda the crown lady and she agreed with my mama that I am for sure the most beautiful thing in nature.

I took a snooze on mommy's belly in the shade.

And then we hung out and chatted with some other kids.

Finally we were on our way home. I hugged and kissed up my baby doll the whole ride home (well, at least until the Blasdell exit where I lost my witts. Can you blame me? 3 hours in a car is a long time!). I had an amazing day with my family!

Willow Knows Best

It continues to amaze me how babies have an inate ability to self regulate and find their perfect balance in all aspects of life. Whether it be eating, sleeping, or balancing mood, Willow always finds her way. She is constantly reminding me that less control is better. Coming from a former control addict, this is a serious area of growth. I am learning that when I offer Willow an environment of calmness and opportunity, she will sleep. When I listen to her nursing cues and make available healthy, yummy food she takes in what she needs. When I am peaceful and centered, she too can find peace and focus. It is amazing how this tiny being knows so much! May she always be so in-tune.

Why do we use cloth diapers?
-They are so cute!
-They are much less expensive.
-Washing diapers is easier then buying them.
-We LOVE Mother Earth.
-I am hoping that when I need to wear diapers,
Willow does me the favor of putting cloth next to
my skin instead of chemical filled paper.

This year, my first Mothers' Day, I learned the true meaning of the day.
It is not about a day off, eating brunch, or getting flowers.

Mothers' Day is about celebrating the honor of sharing life

with someone as precious as Willow.
